Why Britain's Christmas shoppers are already preparing for December

Christmas shopping now starts in July as UK households spread costs across months. Rising bills and handmade gift trends push festive prep earlier than ever.

Why Britain's Christmas shoppers are already preparing for December

For generations, Christmas shopping began with the first signs of winter. Department stores unveiled festive window displays, television schedules filled with seasonal advertisements and shoppers reluctantly accepted that another December rush was about to begin. Today, that calendar has changed beyond recognition.

Christmas, it seems, now starts in the middle of summer.

While the sight of festive products appearing in July was once enough to prompt complaints that retailers were rushing the seasons, many consumers have quietly embraced the shift. Rising household costs, the growing popularity of handmade gifts and the desire to avoid the financial pressure of December have encouraged shoppers to spread both the cost and the workload across several months. What was once considered premature has become increasingly practical.

The trend is particularly evident within the UK's flourishing craft sector, where Christmas is no longer a last-minute project but one that often begins long before autumn arrives. Handmade decorations, personalised gifts and festive home décor require time, making July and August an increasingly attractive time to begin preparing for the celebrations.

Craft Buddy is among the latest brands to respond to that changing behaviour with the launch of its 2026 Christmas Crystal Art® collection, bringing a full range of festive crafting kits to market months before most households have even considered decorating the tree.

At the centre of the collection is the new Christmas Crystal Art® Mystery Box, a £24.99 bundle containing more than £50 worth of festive Crystal Art® products selected from across the seasonal range. Rather than allowing customers to choose individual designs, the concept embraces the surprise element, offering a selection of Christmas-themed projects that could include everything from festive decorations and greetings cards to seasonal artwork and home décor.

The popularity of mystery boxes has grown rapidly across a number of retail sectors over recent years, combining the excitement of discovery with the perception of added value. Within the craft market, where enthusiasts are often eager to experiment with new designs and techniques, the format offers an accessible way to expand a collection while introducing crafters to products they may not otherwise have considered.

Alongside the mystery box, Craft Buddy's wider Christmas collection reflects the broad appeal that Crystal Art®has developed across the UK. The range includes traditional winter landscapes, festive wildlife, Christmas decorations, gift ideas and projects suitable for both experienced hobbyists and those discovering the craft for the first time. Many of the completed pieces are designed to become part of a family's Christmas traditions, returning year after year as seasonal decorations rather than disposable festive purchases.

Crystal Art®, which combines adhesive canvases with individually placed resin crystals to create shimmering finished designs, has become one of the fastest-growing categories within the craft market. Its appeal lies not only in the finished product but also in the process itself. For many enthusiasts, the careful placement of each crystal provides a welcome opportunity to slow down, focus on a single task and enjoy a creative activity away from the pace of everyday life.

That appeal has only strengthened as consumers increasingly look for hobbies that combine relaxation with a tangible sense of achievement. Crafting has experienced a sustained resurgence in recent years, with many people rediscovering creative pastimes that produce something lasting rather than simply passing the time. Christmas projects naturally lend themselves to that trend, allowing decorations and handmade gifts to carry a greater sense of personal meaning than something bought from a shop shelf days before the festivities begin.

The timing of Craft Buddy's latest launch also reflects a broader change in the retail calendar. Christmas has steadily evolved from a single shopping season into a months-long period of planning, budgeting and preparation. For households seeking to manage spending more carefully, purchasing gifts and festive activities throughout the summer and autumn can ease the financial pressure traditionally associated with December.

Retailers have adapted accordingly. What once seemed like an attempt to extend the festive shopping period has become a response to genuine consumer behaviour. Increasingly, shoppers are choosing to prepare earlier, complete handmade projects over several months and avoid the last-minute rush that has long defined the festive season.

For craft enthusiasts, that earlier timetable offers another advantage. Larger projects no longer need to be hurried through dark winter evenings, while handmade gifts can be completed at a more enjoyable pace, allowing creativity to remain part of the festive experience rather than another item on an already crowded December to-do list.

As Britain's Christmas calendar continues to move forward, festive crafting appears to be following close behind. For many households, the season of handmade decorations, personalised gifts and creative evenings no longer begins with the first frost. Increasingly, it starts while summer is still in full swing.
