Marie Kondo returns to London as Britain rethinks the pursuit of the perfect home

The Japanese organising expert will headline Home, Life & You LIVE at Excel London this October, as the event turns its attention from immaculate interiors towards a rather broader question: whether our homes actually make our lives better.

For years, the ideal home has been presented as something to be perfected.

Rooms were expected to be immaculate, possessions carefully concealed and interiors sufficiently composed to survive inspection by both visitors and Instagram. Yet behind the beautifully arranged shelves and carefully selected cushions remained the considerably less photogenic reality of actually living there.

Marie Kondo helped to change that conversation.

The Japanese organising expert became internationally recognised for an approach to possessions built not simply around having less, but around deciding what deserves to remain. This autumn she returns to London as the headline speaker at Home, Life & You LIVE, which will take place at Excel London on October 17 and 18.

Following her appearance at the event last year, Kondo will use the 2026 show to discuss her new project, The Art of Tokimeki, examining how people can identify what matters to them and make changes intended to bring their surroundings and everyday lives more closely into alignment.

The idea feels particularly well suited to the moment.

The domestic conversation of the past decade has often oscillated between consumption and restraint. We are encouraged to improve our homes by buying things, then encouraged to declutter them when those things become overwhelming.

Kondo's enduring influence has come partly from offering a different question. Rather than beginning with what a home ought to contain, her philosophy asks what its owner actually values.

Beyond the immaculate interior

Home, Life & You LIVE is itself broadening the familiar territory of the interiors exhibition.

The event, returning for its second year, is organised around three areas titled Home, Life and You.

The first covers the practical business of domestic life, including interiors, cleaning, storage, organisation and decluttering. The second moves into routines, productivity, family life, style and wellbeing. The third considers personal development, confidence and mindset.

It is an ambitious attempt to connect the physical home with the quality of the life taking place inside it.

Penny Moyses, founder of Home, Life & You LIVE, argues that the pursuit of domestic perfection has become increasingly detached from what people actually require from their homes.

“I think we've spent years chasing the idea of the perfect home, when what most of us really want is a home that works for us,” she said.

“A home that supports the way we live, helps us navigate busy lives and gives us the space to be our best selves.”

That distinction between appearance and usefulness is becoming increasingly relevant. Homes have had to accommodate far more than domestic life in recent years. They have become offices, gyms, classrooms, entertainment spaces and places of retreat, often simultaneously.

An immaculate room is of limited value if maintaining it becomes another source of work.

From decluttering to the realities of everyday life

Kondo will be joined by speakers approaching domestic life from rather different directions.

The Declutter Hub will address organisation, while Kate Hall, creator of The Full Freezer Method, will bring food management into the conversation. Mums That Rave and winners of the GLOMAMA Awards will also appear across the weekend.

Lou Featherstone, known as Lu in Luland, will bring her characteristically colourful campervan to the event, with a message centred on self expression and refusing to allow age to dictate how life ought to look.

More than 100 brands are expected to exhibit, spanning interiors, storage, cleaning, laundry, sustainable living, beauty and personal wellbeing. MyHenry, Minky, Neutradol, Cristalinas and Eco360 Hygiene Products are among the established names due to appear, alongside independent businesses.

The commercial element is unavoidable at an exhibition devoted partly to improving one's home, but the more interesting proposition sits behind it.

Our relationship with domestic life is changing.

The immaculate show home has long exercised an unusual influence over British interiors. Yet a house ultimately has to accommodate the untidy business of ordinary existence. Children arrive home. Laundry accumulates. Cupboards fill. Dinner has to be made. Work follows people through the front door.

Perhaps the more sophisticated aspiration is therefore not perfection but ease.

Kondo's return to London arrives within that wider reconsideration of what makes a good home. Her philosophy has sometimes been reduced to decluttering, but its more enduring proposition concerns choosing deliberately what occupies one's space and attention.

The perfect home may remain elusive.

A home that works properly for the people living in it seems a considerably more useful ambition.

Home, Life & You LIVE takes place at Excel London on October 17 and 18, 2026. Weekend admission is £20.
