Capella strengthens its grip on the world’s luxury hotel rankings

Five properties from the Asian hotel group have been recognised in The 50 Best Hotels 2026, as Capella expands further into China and prepares for its first opening in the Middle East.

Luxury hotel rankings are an imperfect measure of what makes a great place to stay, but repeated appearances can say rather more than a single moment of acclaim. For Capella Hotel Group, this year’s 50 Best Hotels list suggests that its particular approach to luxury is travelling well.

Three of the group’s properties have made the global top 50, led by Capella Bangkok at No.2. Capella Sydney takes 16th place, while Patina Osaka enters the ranking at No.33, little more than a year after opening. Capella Hanoi and Capella Singapore also appear in the extended top 100, at No.81 and No.97 respectively.

There were individual honours too. Capella Sydney was named Best Hotel in Oceania for a second consecutive year, while Patina Osaka received the Nikka Best New Hotel Award. The latter is particularly notable for a property that opened only in May 2025.

Luxury rooted in place

There is no single architectural formula linking the three highest ranked hotels.

Capella Bangkok sits beside the Chao Phraya River, with 101 suites and villas designed around its relationship with the historic waterfront. In Sydney, the group has taken a rather different approach, restoring the former Department of Education building in the city’s Sandstone Precinct and filling it with more than 1,400 works of art.

Patina Osaka, meanwhile, represents the newer side of the portfolio. The 221 room hotel overlooks Osaka Castle Park and Naniwa no Miya Park and draws upon kisetsukan, the Japanese idea of an awareness of the changing seasons. Natural materials, large windows and views across the surrounding landscape are intended to make that sense of place part of the stay itself.

That emphasis on location rather than simply reproducing the same luxury hotel in different cities is increasingly important at the upper end of hospitality. Travellers paying premium prices can already expect polished rooms, accomplished restaurants and extensive spas. Distinction increasingly comes from whether a hotel feels as though it belongs to its surroundings.

The results also arrive as Capella continues to expand. Patina Tianjin is expected to introduce the Patina brand to China by the end of 2026, while Capella Nanjing will become Capella’s third property in the country. Capella Diriyah in Riyadh is then planned for 2027, marking the group’s entry into the Middle East.

The 50 Best Hotels ranking is determined by votes from more than 800 members of its academy, including hoteliers, travel journalists, educators and experienced luxury travellers. As with any industry ranking, it remains a judgement rather than an objective measure of quality.

For Capella, however, the significance lies in the breadth of this year’s showing. Bangkok has now appeared for three consecutive years, Sydney for two, and Osaka has joined them almost immediately after opening.

In an increasingly crowded luxury hotel market, consistency across several cities may ultimately matter more than taking the top spot in any one of them.
