Beyond Tokyo and Kyoto: why seasoned travellers are looking deeper into Japan

Japan has rarely been more fashionable. A weak yen, expanding flight routes and a global fascination with Japanese culture have helped push visitor numbers to record levels, turning destinations such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka into some of the busiest tourist hotspots in the world. Yet for experienced travellers, the country's greatest appeal increasingly lies far beyond its best known cities.

That is the thinking behind a series of new itineraries unveiled by luxury travel specialist Powder Byrne, which is marking 35 years of organising bespoke holidays in Japan by encouraging visitors to venture beyond the familiar. Rather than concentrating on the country's established tourist circuit, the operator is focusing on regions that remain comparatively overlooked, from the volcanic landscapes of Kyushu to the snow covered mountains of Tohoku and the celebrated powder fields of Hokkaido.

The shift reflects a broader change in luxury travel. Increasingly, affluent holidaymakers are less interested in ticking off famous landmarks than in experiencing destinations through local expertise and slower, more immersive itineraries. Private guides, family run inns, regional cuisine and access to places that rarely feature in conventional guidebooks have become as valuable as five star accommodation itself.

Nowhere illustrates that better than Hokkaido. Long regarded by skiers as one of the world's premier destinations for powder snow, Japan's northernmost island has developed an international reputation for exceptionally light, dry conditions that attract enthusiasts from across Europe, North America and Australasia. While resorts such as Niseko have become household names among winter sports enthusiasts, the wider region continues to offer quieter slopes, traditional hot spring resorts and a distinctly different pace of life from Japan's major cities.

Powder Byrne's anniversary programme also shines a spotlight on Tohoku, a region that remains largely absent from many international itineraries despite offering some of Japan's finest mountain scenery. Known for its deep snowfall during winter and ancient pilgrimage routes during the warmer months, Tohoku presents an alternative vision of Japan, where rural traditions, historic temples and family run ryokan continue to shape daily life. For visitors willing to travel beyond the established tourist trail, it offers an experience that feels markedly less commercial than many of the country's better known destinations.

Perhaps the most intriguing itinerary heads south to Kyushu, where volcanic landscapes dominate both the scenery and the culture. Active craters, steaming hot springs and dramatic coastlines are combined with centuries of history, traditional craftsmanship and some of Japan's oldest religious sites. It is a reminder that Japan's identity extends far beyond neon skylines and bullet trains, encompassing landscapes and communities that have changed remarkably little over generations.

The company has also introduced a new autumn itinerary linking Tokyo with lesser visited coastal regions before concluding in Kyoto. Timed to coincide with Japan's celebrated autumn colours, the journey reflects growing demand for seasonal travel experiences that prioritise regional food, cultural traditions and slower exploration over packed sightseeing schedules.

The popularity of such holidays mirrors wider trends within global tourism. As international travel has rebounded, many experienced travellers have become increasingly determined to avoid overcrowded destinations in favour of places that retain a stronger sense of local identity. Japan, despite record visitor numbers, remains unusually well placed to satisfy that demand because so much of the country remains largely untouched by mass tourism.

After 35 years operating in Japan, Powder Byrne is betting that the country's future as a luxury destination lies not simply in introducing visitors to its famous cities, but in revealing the quieter regions that have always existed beyond them. For travellers who believe the most memorable journeys begin where the guidebook ends, that may prove to be Japan's greatest attraction of all.
