House Of Beaufort There’s a newish kid on the masculine fragrance block. ‘Discover BeauFort London's Come Hell or High-Water collection, featuring visceral, challenging and chaotic fragrances. Handmade in Britain.’ Niche perfume brand BeauFort London is founded by musician Leo Crabtree (drummer in the famous band The Prodigy). Each BeauFort fragrance has its own powerful character, often with a dark smoky character.

All too often this kind of colourful hype is overblown when it comes to the rich tapestry of marketing descriptions that Perfume houses attach to their products. Many are rather pretentious, flowery waffle that is both laughable and underwhelming when smelt. However, this collection delivers on its promise across these chapters. Oh, and how cool is it that founder Leo Crabtree was Prodigy’s drummer? Check his journey out here

Come Hell or High-Water and Revenants. The themes are nautical and yet distinctly earthy.

Fathom V This is my favourite in the first chapter. It starts with a real blast of earthy greenness but also salt, pepper and spice. The sea washing up on a beach at dusk which is backed by a moss covered, humid, fetid forest. But this woody haven is also alive with wild jasmine, pungent and full on. I also get the smell of the stems of freshly cut flowers. It is quite intoxicating.

Rake and Ruin ‘Rake & Ruin Eau De Parfum is inspired by the works of satirist William Hogarth, this fragrance summons his characters from a gin-soaked 18th century London.’ Guess what? This smells like immersing yourself in a bath of spicy gin. What’s not to like about that? The main accord is ‘woody’ and aromatics, but this barrel is gin soaked. If you like your gin ‘n’ tonics pimped up this is the frag for you.

Vi Et Armis Loving the colonial reference points of tea, tobacco, opium and whiskey for this scent. Drinking whiskey by a campfire at night, where the wood that’s burning is not just any old lumber, but something refined like agarwood or cedar. The smoky top-note is classy and strident but dry’s down to a more subtle masterpiece. Don’t be put off either by the cookie dough and lemon top note. This fades and develops very nicely indeed, like when you follow desert with a single malt snifter on the rocks and a cigar.

Tonnerre This one is a bit of an animal. It starts off with a smoky lime, which I love, and a whiff of gunpowder (I kid you not) and then the real surprise hits… barbecue bacon. Yes, that’s right. A full English, with sausage and black pudding as well, cooked outdoors. The inspiration is the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. A reviewer on Fragrantica (an online website) said that this smells like being on board with the Pirates of the Caribbean. Cool.

Terror and Magnificence This one is really stacked, only lacking the kitchen sink. A heady concoction of amber, leather, spice, tobacco, woody, balsamic and that’s just the top notes. It’s all rounded off with a lick of brown sugar. Think of a very rich ganache-type desert that is naughty but irresistible.

Iron Duke This one is full-on Metallica. Not the band as such, but then why not with all that dry ice and strident riffing? Starts off as a generic smoky effort, similar to Tonnere, but then riffs down into an amazing leathery, boozy treat. That Duke is a player for sure.

I have covered the frags from this collection that stand out for me. There is a new chapter 'Force Majeure' which I will explore in due course. In the meantime, I would strongly advise that men check out the ones here that appeal. It goes without saying that they are all sexy as hell (and high-water), as well as quite original and different.
