Welsh Whisky’s Global Surge Continues as Penderyn’s Aged Statement Range Lands for the first time in 25 Years

Welsh whisky is entering a new era of global recognition and premiumisation, with fresh industry data confirming its rapid rise and Penderyn Distillery marking the moment with the release of its new aged statement expressions.

According to Future Market Insights, Wales’ whisky market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.8% through 2036, positioning it among the fastest-growing whisky regions worldwide. This places Wales firmly alongside established producers, closely tracking Scotland’s 11.7% growth and outpacing Northern Ireland.

The wider UK whisky category is forecast to expand from USD 17.3 billion in 2026 to USD 53.2 billion by 2036, a CAGR of 11.9%. Within this, Wales is emerging as a significant growth engine, driven by a thriving craft distilling sector and increasing global demand for premium, provenance-led spirits.

This momentum is reinforced by strong category fundamentals. Alcoholic whisky accounts for 82% of UK market share, with unflavoured expressions representing 65%, signalling continued consumer preference for traditional styles. The hospitality sector (HoReCa) contributes 55% of total whisky consumption, positioning Welsh whisky at the forefront of premium experiences across bars, restaurants, and hotels.

At the centre of this growth is Penderyn Distillery, the pioneer of the modern Welsh whisky revival. With more than 140 international awards, exports to over 50 countries, and production capacity reaching approximately 2.3 million bottles annually, Penderyn is now recognised as the fastest-growing brand in the global “World Whisky” category.

Building on this momentum, Penderyn has launched a new range of aged statement whiskies, marking a significant milestone in the maturation of both the brand and the wider Welsh whisky category. The release reflects increasing global demand for age-statement expressions that showcase depth, provenance, and craftsmanship - further cementing Welsh whisky’s position in the premium segment.

Stephen Davies, CEO of Penderyn Distillery, said: “Penderyn has always been about putting Wales on the whisky map. Now as the fastest-growing world whisky, we are thrilled to champion National Welsh Whisky Day and bring global attention to what Welsh whisky stands for - quality, innovation, and identity.”

He added: “Bringing whisky back to Wales wasn’t just about making spirits; it was about restoring a lost tradition. The launch of our aged statement whiskies represents the next chapter in that journey - demonstrating the depth, maturity and global confidence of Welsh whisky today.”

Once overshadowed by Scotch and Irish whiskey, Welsh whisky is now gaining recognition among international judges, collectors, and bartenders as a serious competitor. A growing number of distilleries, combined with a clear focus on quality and innovation, is helping define a distinct Welsh whisky identity.

The category’s credibility has been further strengthened by Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status for Single Malt Welsh Whisky, formally recognising Wales as a protected whisky-producing nation and reinforcing its authenticity in international markets.

Penderyn continues to lead culturally as well as commercially. Its “Icons of Wales” series, including releases such as “Hiraeth,” captures themes of heritage, language, and identity, connecting with both domestic audiences and the global Welsh diaspora. Today, Welsh whisky is increasingly viewed as a form of “soft power,” promoting Wales’ story across more than 48 international markets.

Distillery sites in the Brecon Beacons, Swansea, and North Wales are also driving tourism and regional growth, transforming local landscapes into destinations and embedding whisky into modern Welsh culture - from national celebrations to major sporting events.

At a UK level, whisky exports generate more than £6.2 billion annually. With Wales projected to grow at 10.8% each year, its contribution to this total is expected to increase steadily, supported by premium hospitality, tourism, and expanding direct-to-consumer channels.

Davies added: “Each award validates our approach - combining innovation with tradition. There’s no Welsh person prouder than those abroad who see Penderyn as a taste of home.”

As demand continues to accelerate, Welsh whisky is no longer an emerging category - it is a confident, premium export and a defining expression of modern Wales on the global stage.
