THE MEN’S SCENT EDIT - September round up

There is something changing in men’s fragrance. The most compelling scents right now aren’t simply “masculine”; they’re textured, sensual and individual. Leather can sit beside orange blossom. Tea can meet oud. Citrus can soften into musk. The point is no longer to smell conventionally expensive; it is to smell distinctive.

These are the five bottles on my radar this month: fragrances chosen less for following a season than for creating a wardrobe of different identities.

ALLSAINTS - Shoreditch Leather

This is leather without the boardroom. Shoreditch Leather takes the attitude of a worn-in black jacket and makes it unexpectedly polished: saffron and elemi give the opening a suede-like quality before leather, jasmine and sandalwood move into vetiver, patchouli and warm amber. There is something distinctly London about it; dark, slightly undone, sensual without appearing to try.

PENHALIGON’S - The Blazing Mister Sam

Then there is Mister Sam: fragrance as pure charisma. Penhaligon’s builds it around black pepper and cardamom, with dry patchouli and creamy cedar underneath. It has swagger, but importantly, it also has polish. The extraordinary gold bull cap tells you everything before you even spray it: this one likes attention.

BORNTOSTANDOUT - Black Karak

The wildcard, and perhaps the most fashion-forward choice of the edit. Black Karak takes the comforting ritual of karak tea and disrupts it. Karak tea, cardamom and coffee meet black tea, saffron, woods and tonka; the brand describes the idea as comfort transformed into something darker and wilder. That tension is exactly why I love it. Sweetness without innocence. Warmth with an edge. It feels decadent, nocturnal, and unapologetically excessive.

LES EAUX PRIMORDIALES - Elevation

Elevation changes the temperature completely. Pear and hazelnut introduce a luminous softness, followed by cardamom, orange blossom, cinnamon and freesia, before vanilla, guaiac wood, ambroxan and musk create an almost milky finish. This is quite luxury translated into fragrance. It doesn’t need darkness or aggression to feel masculine. Instead, it is clean, creamy, composed and beautifully considered. Think cream cashmere, immaculate trousers, gold hardware, and morning light.

SUNNAMUSK - Escape

And finally, the easiest reach of the five. Escape begins with bergamot, mandarin, blood orange and timur pepper before moving through tea and orange blossom and settling into musk, cedarwood and ambergris. It provides the freshness this edit needs, but without becoming another predictable aquatic men’s scent. There is brightness, then warmth underneath it. This is the bottle for crisp shirts, airport lounges, weekends away and those rare days when effortless really is the desired effect.
