Keely Hodgkinson will defend her ATHLOS crown as women’s track comes to London

There are few better ways to launch an athletics event in Britain than putting Keely Hodgkinson on the start line.

The Olympic champion will headline ATHLOS London on September 18, as the women’s track competition stages its first meeting outside the United States at StoneX Stadium.

Hodgkinson returns not simply as the home favourite but as the defending ATHLOS 800m champion and, after another formidable year, the woman everyone else must beat.

She broke the women’s indoor 800m world record in February, taking down a mark that had stood since before she was born, before claiming her first world indoor title the following month.

Now comes London.

“The atmosphere at ATHLOS New York was incredible, so I’m really excited to return and compete at its first London event,” Hodgkinson said.

“Racing in front of a home crowd is always special, and I can’t wait to experience that ATHLOS energy in the UK.”

Her victory in New York last year provided one of the competition’s defining images. Hodgkinson won the 800m before being presented with the ATHLOS winner’s Tiffany & Co. crown by Serena Williams.

This time, she will have British support behind her and some formidable company on the bill.

Sha’Carri Richardson, Gabby Thomas, Georgia Hunter Bell, Amber Anning and Tara Davis Woodhall are among the athletes confirmed for London, giving ATHLOS the sort of international field normally associated with the sport’s biggest championships.

That is important because ATHLOS is attempting something rather more ambitious than staging another athletics meeting.

The competition was created around women’s track and field, combining elite racing with some of the presentation more commonly associated with major American sports and entertainment. Athletes receive personalised walk out music, live entertainment accompanies the competition and prize money is substantial.

Across its two 2026 events, ATHLOS says more than $2.1 million in prize money will be awarded. An individual event victory is worth $65,000, while overall champions receive a further $25,000 bonus and the competition’s distinctive Tiffany & Co. crown. Eligible participating athletes can also receive equity in the league.

The money matters.

Athletics has long possessed the athletes, rivalries and extraordinary physical performances required of a major spectator sport. What it has not always done particularly well is package them for audiences outside the weeks surrounding an Olympic Games.

ATHLOS is betting that putting the athletes themselves at the centre of the spectacle can change that.

And Hodgkinson is an obvious figure around whom to build its British arrival.

Her Olympic success has already made her one of the recognisable faces of British athletics, but the 800 metres offers something else particularly valuable for a live audience: there is very little time for anything to become dull. Two laps, tactical positioning, acceleration and then an often brutal final 200 metres.

In London, the defending champion will also carry the expectation that accompanies competing at home. That can be a burden. For ATHLOS, it is precisely the point.

British athletics has produced another generation of women capable of competing with the best in the world. On September 18, rather than travelling to a championship elsewhere to watch them, London gets the show itself.
