What Would Jarvis Do? runs at The Omnibus Theatre 6-16 October. Laura Grillo's absurdist comedy follows two Jarvis Cocker superfans chasing his yellow trousers.
A new play from writer Laura Grillo celebrating the memory of the hopeful era of Britpop and an absurd, playful exploration of what happens when the people and things we hold onto disappear - and how we might find a way forward.
What Would Jarvis Do? is an experimental, absurdist, black comedy about fandom, grief, and the stories we attach to treasured objects. This new play from writer Laura Grillo is a celebration of the memory of the hopeful era of Britpop and a playful exploration of what happens when the people and things we hold onto disappear - and how we might find a way forward. The play focuses on best friends, Didi and GG, who are Jarvis Cocker superfans and who buy a pair of yellow trousers, supposedly worn by the man himself. Only there's one problem. They might not be Jarvis's trousers at all… Via moments of cyclical looping and restarting, they find themselves exploring their own wants and needs as they journey through an ever-shifitng environment, meeting increasingly eccentric characters and trying to maintain the one goal they have set out to achieve – acquire the real trousers. Inspired by writer Laura Grillo’s own experiences of sudden loss and grief during lockdown, the play is a tribute to hope, yearning, and the Britpop music that helped her find some light in the darkness.
After two sold-out development performances, the production runs at The Omnibus Theatre for a two week run from 6th-16thOctober.
