The Science Of Gifting: Why The Perfect Present Is More Than Just Good Taste

In an era where thoughtful gifting is more powerful than ever, new insights reveal that the most memorable gifts aren’t just luxurious or expensive, instead they’re emotionally intelligent.

Luxury gifting specialist and Roxy Wraps founder Katrina Aleksa has shared the science behind truly impactful gifting, shedding light on why emotionally precise presents matter more than their price tags.

Gifting is far more than social etiquette, it’s an emotional act rooted in neuroscience. Studies show that gift-giving activates the brain’s reward system, particularly the ventral striatum, releasing dopamine which is the same feel-good chemical linked to anticipation, motivation and pleasure.

Katrina explained, ‘It’s not just about the object. The wrapping, the surprise, the moment of unboxing, all of it contributes to a heightened emotional experience. A beautifully presented gift becomes theatre.”

Emotional resonance over extravagance

Research from the University of California suggests that gifts demonstrating emotional insight are perceived as more meaningful than expensive but impersonal ones. The brain’s medial prefrontal cortex, responsible for social connection, responds more strongly to personalised gestures.

Katrina shared, “It’s less about spending the most, and more about knowing the person best. A gift that says, ‘I see you’ leaves a lasting emotional imprint.”

Why giving feels just as good as receiving

Giving is deeply tied to human connection. The joy we feel watching someone light up is driven by mirror neurons, which are the brain cells that simulate another person’s emotions.

Katrina said, “When we give well, we don’t deplete our energy, instead we strengthen our relationships. It reinforces our identity as someone who understands and cares.”

A 2022 study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology revealed that unexpected gifts, given outside traditional holidays, were considered significantly more meaningful.

Katrina explained why this moment can mean so much more as she shared, “Out-of-occasion gifting sends a powerful message: I was thinking of you, just because. It transforms a gift from a social obligation into a sincere emotional statement.”

How to gift with intention

So how can we apply this science practically? As a gifting expert, Katrina shared her top tips for giving the perfect gift and with intention.

Don’t just buy for who they are. Gift for how they want to feel.

For the overwhelmed mother: a silk pillowcase, handwritten note, or an hour of quiet wrapped in ribbon

For the high-performer: a slow recipe book, cold therapy session, or a weekend ritual

For the person who has everything: something they mentioned in passing, remembered and returned to

The emotional ROI of gifting

In a world of abundance, gifting is no longer about acquiring, instead it’s about acknowledging. The most lasting gifts are rarely just objects. They are moments of understanding, beautifully packaged.

Katrina concluded, “The most treasured gifts are not defined by price, but by how deeply they connect. They’re the ones that say: I see you. I remember. I care.”
