The Old Fire Station at Oxford announces A Christmas Carol Continues

A Christmas Carol Continues is the comic sequel to the Dickens classic, penned by Jonny Donahoe, co-creator and performer of the Olivier-nominated Every Brilliant Thing, satirising exploitative landlords and drawing parallels between the Victorian and today’s housing crisis. Seven years after the ghostly intervention, Scrooge remains a good man and a positive force in the community, but his social position also remains the same: a wealthy landlord and moneylender whose business gives him financial control of those around him. When Christmas Eve rolls around again, familiar figures return to haunt him and show him he still has much to learn about his impact on the world.

The Old Fire Station’s in-house Christmas production will once again draw relevance from homelessness charity Crisis, who share their building, and continues their tradition of putting on funny plays that tackle some of the more difficult sides of Christmas such as loneliness and hardship.

Jonny Donahoe is a writer and comedian best known for co-creating (with Duncan Macmillan) and starring in Every Brilliant Thing. He started his career at the Old Fire Station at the age of 17 with his first play Working Title, directed by Mike Bartlett. He returned in 2016 with a new play, Thirty Christmases, with Rachel Parris and Paddy Gervers, who also performs with him in their comedy act Jonny and the Baptists.

Jonny Donahoe said, “It is a great joy to return to the Old Fire Station, to engage with questions of housing and renters’ rights in Oxford and beyond, and to imagine what might have unfolded had Charles Dickens ever met Karl Marx.”

The Old Fire Station is a multiform arts centre in the heart of Oxford, sharing a building and deep partnership with Crisis, the homelessness charity. The OFS encourages people from all backgrounds to understand and shape the world in which we live through stories, creativity and the arts, and by connecting with others.
