Luxury has long relied on visibility. The right hotel, the right destination, the right room, the right table. For decades, the industry has largely functioned as a language of external signals, built around exclusivity, spectacle, and the careful performance of status. Increasingly, however, a different kind of luxury is beginning to emerge, one less concerned with appearance and far more invested in how a person actually feels.

Frédéric Charland believes that shift is already underway.

As co-founder of HIYÄM Wellness Living, Charland is helping build an ecosystem that sits somewhere between hospitality, wellness, private concierge, and personal transformation, though he resists the limitations of any single label. In conversation, he speaks less about products or destinations and more about intimacy, listening, alignment, and the growing desire among modern leaders for experiences that feel deeply personal rather than commercially manufactured.

This second chapter in Hinton Magazine’s four part series on HIYÄM Wellness Living explores Charland’s perspective on business, expansion, emotional intelligence, and the changing definition of luxury itself. Every meaningful brand begins with an idea, but building one that balances intimacy, philosophy, and global ambition requires something more. What first drew you to co-creating HIYÄM, and what did you immediately recognise in its potential? I immediately recognized the potential to create something entirely new, not only within the broader wellness space, but within the HIYÄM ecosystem itself. Beyond our fully customized luxury retreats, designed uniquely for each guest, there was a clear opportunity to build a much more expansive and integrated experience. HIYÄM is not just about retreats as you know it actualy, it’s an evolving ecosystem. This includes our VIP concierge service, our curated online boutique, and additional projects that extend the experience far beyond a single stay. For example, our online boutique is launching on May 11th, 2026 at 11:11, and represents a natural extension of the HIYÄM lifestyle into everyday living. Another upcoming project is a book currently being developed by Hiyäm, set for release in October 2026. It explores deeper dimensions of memory, identity, and personal evolution, themes that are very aligned with our philosophy. There are also a few elements we are intentionally keeping undisclosed for now, as we believe in revealing things with intention and at the right moment. What we are building with HIYÄM is not a single offering, but a living, evolving ecosystem designed to support transformation across multiple layers of life, something unique that you find only at Hiyäm Wellenss Living. HIYÄM occupies an unusual space between wellness, lifestyle, and transformative experience. From a strategic perspective, how do you define what HIYÄM truly is beyond traditional industry labels? I completely resonate with that perspective. HIYÄM is not something that fits neatly into a single category, and that’s intentional. If I had to define it beyond traditional labels, I would say HIYÄM is a way of life. At its core, it is built on a very unique energy and vision, one that comes from deeply personal experiences and a profound understanding of transformation. There are elements of that story that will be shared more fully in the upcoming book, but what matters is how that energy has been translated into something tangible, something people can actually live and experience. HIYÄM is about inspiring individuals to reconnect with meaning, to realign their lives, adopt new habits, and move toward a more intentional way of living. The retreats are one expression of that. The transformation people experience there is real, but it’s only the beginning. From that lifestyle naturally emerges the idea of an ecosystem, one that supports this way of living beyond a single moment or destination. That’s where HWL elements like the concierge service and the online boutique come in: they extend the experience into everyday life. So yes, HIYÄM exists at the intersection of wellness, lifestyle, and transformation, but ultimately, it goes beyond all of them. It’s about creating a continuous, evolving journey rather than a one-time experience. We, at HWL believe that every day choices counts into building new rituals for a more intentional life. In scaling a concept rooted in bespoke intimacy, how do you approach growth without diluting the very essence that makes it powerful? For us at HIYÄM, growth is not about volume, it’s about depth and intentional expansion. Scaling doesn’t mean hosting hundreds or thousands of retreats per year. In fact, that would dilute the very essence of what makes HIYÄM powerful. Our approach is the opposite: we protect intimacy while expanding the ways we can support our guests. Growth, for us, means creating a broader ecosystem of offerings that allow individuals to stay connected to the experience long after a retreat ends. It’s about surrounding our guests with multiple touchpoints, through concierge services, curated products, immersive experiences, and ongoing guidance, all designed to help them live a more connected and meaningful life. In that sense, we’re not scaling a product, we’re expanding a relationship. By doing so, we maintain the integrity of each experience while increasing our impact in a more sustainable and aligned way of living. Modern luxury often leans heavily on visibility, scale, or exclusivity for its own sake. How do you view the future of luxury, and where does HIYÄM intentionally challenge conventional models? I believe the future of luxury is shifting from something that is seen… to something that is felt / lived. For a long time, luxury has been defined by visibility, scale, and status, how exclusive something looks from the outside. True luxury is becoming more internal. It’s about time, presence, truth, and transformation. It’s no longer about being seen in the right place, it’s about experiencing something that genuinely changes you, being a better you, a better version of yourself. At HIYÄM, we intentionally move away from traditional models of luxury. What we create is a more discreet form of luxury, one that is intimate, personal, deeply human and meaningful. Our form of exclusivity is not driven by marketing or access for status. It comes from the nature of the experience itself, the level of attention, care, and transformation that each guest receives and more important, decide to give to himself. In that sense, HIYÄM challenges conventional luxury by redefining its purpose: not to impress from the outside, but to create something meaningful from within. Co-founding a concept so deeply tied to personal transformation likely requires a unique balance between emotional intelligence and business clarity. How do you personally navigate that intersection? I believe this is a space where no one ever truly “arrives”, we are all constantly evolving. On a personal level, I’ve invested many years into developing emotional intelligence through workshops, training, and continuous self-work. The human experience is something I find endlessly fascinating, it’s complex and dynamic. At the same time, building multiple companies has given me a strong foundation in business, decision-making, structure, execution, and clarity. That side of me has been shaped through experience, challenges, and real-world learning. What I find most interesting is the intersection of both worlds, emotional intelligence and business clarity. For me, this balance comes down to intuition, supported by knowledge shaped through experience. Intuition allows me to sense what is truly aligned with people, opportunities, and direction while logic ensures that what we build remains grounded, sustainable, and clear. It’s not about choosing one over the other, but about knowing when to lean into each. That’s where the real balance, and strength comes from. What have you learned about today’s discerning global client, particularly leaders and visionaries, that perhaps traditional hospitality or wellness industries still misunderstand? What is often misunderstood by traditional hospitality and wellness industries is that luxury, at this level, is no longer about excess or standardization. It’s about precision, presence, and understanding the individual behind the title. It comes down to a few essential elements: privacy, respect, deep listening, and true intimacy. These clients value discretion above visibility. They appreciate environments where they can let their guard down, spaces that are not performative, but genuine. Intimacy, in this context, doesn’t mean proximity, it means creating experiences that are tailored not only to their preferences, but to where they are in their life journey. At HIYÄM, we’ve learned that the real luxury is not in what you offer, but in how precisely and thoughtfully you offer it.

HIYÄM’s offering feels highly intentional in both philosophy and execution. When building experiences of this calibre, how important is listening as a leadership tool? At HIYÄM, listening is one of the most essential tools we have, it’s at the core of every experience we create. It’s what allows each guest to feel truly seen, understood, and supported in a way that goes beyond expectations. In many ways, it’s also what sets us apart. The level of attention we give to listening directly shapes the depth and quality of each experience. When we speak about luxury and true richness, it’s not only about aesthetics or visual excellence. It’s about something far more subtle, the luxury of being heard. And that is something that, as HIYÄM often expresses, is too often lost today. For us, listening is not passive. It’s an active, intentional practice that guides how we design, adapt, and deliver every moment. It allows us to create experiences that are not just beautiful, but deeply relevant and transformative.

What has been the greatest challenge in bringing a concept like HIYÄM into the world, particularly one that asks people not simply to consume luxury, but to experience themselves differently? I would say there are two main challenges. The first is shifting the perception of luxury itself, from something you consume to something you embody. The art of simply being has, in many ways, been replaced by the need to own, to accumulate, to display. Inviting people into a space where luxury is experienced internally, through presence, awareness, and transformation, requires a different mindset. That shift can be both powerful and unfamiliar. The second challenge lies in the very nature of our bespoke approach. We don’t offer predefined retreats, we co-create them. And that means helping our guests move from asking, “Where does this happen?” to a more meaningful question: “What is my vision, and where does it want to take place?” For us, their dream becomes the starting point of the experience. But guiding someone to articulate that dream clearly and to trust that it can become reality is a process in itself. That’s where the real work begins, and also where the magic truly happens. Looking ahead, what legacy do you hope HIYÄM leaves, not simply as a business, but as a new model for how people live, lead, and reconnect? I believe legacy, at its core, is a way of living, one that is more connected, more authentic, and more aligned with one’s true self, which is sometimes deeply buried beneath the surface. Through HIYÄM experiences, we aim to create spaces where individuals can rediscover that connection and reconnect with who they truly are. From that place, everything shifts. They are able to make decisions that are more aligned, more intentional, and more grounded in truth. They lead with greater clarity, and they move forward with a deeper sense of ownership and direction. HIYÄM leaves a legacy, not simply as a business, but as a new model, one that invites people to live, lead, and evolve from a place of genuine alignment with themselves and theirs dreams.
